BETWEEN TWO WORLDS, PART 1:
DALYA'S OTHER COUNTRY (SEPTEMBER 22, 2017)
Between Two Worlds, Part 1 discussed the Syrian Civil War and the experience of those displaced from their homes as a result of the conflict.
The event featured a presentation on the “Making of the Modern Middle East,” by Professor of International Security Law, Andreas Borgeas, followed by a screening of Julia Meltzer's film, Dalya's Other Country.
Dalya's Other Country tells the nuanced story of members of a family displaced by the Syrian conflict who are remaking themselves after the parents separate. Effervescent teen Dalya goes to Catholic high school and her mother, Rudayna, enrolls in college as they both walk the line between their Muslim values and the new world in which they find themselves.
Following the screening of the film, representatives from Fresno Interdenominational Refugee Ministries (FIRM) discussed how the refugee crisis has affected Fresno County, providing information on the work they do for the local Syrian refugee community.
